BRASOV, Romania – Every time I travel to Romania, I am reminded of the massive infrastructure challenges for the whole country, especially the urgent need for more high-speed roads. While traveling from Brasov to Bucharest last week, our car was stuck and did not move for more than an hour while an accident scene was cleared up.
In America, believe it or not, the country has many of the same problems. U.S. highways are over-congested and bridges are dangerously in need of repair. Some trips in Chicago that should take 30 minutes take double or triple the time.
President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to spend $550 billion over the next decade to upgrade the nation’s crumbling roads, bridges and waterways has been welcome by many drivers and transportation experts in the U.S. Trump’s economic advisers say the program would create about 3.3 million construction and other related jobs. And Moody’s Analytics says it would add about 0.4 percentage points a year to economic growth.
The United States needs to spend about $3.3 trillion the next decade to fix infrastructure, and there’s currently a $1.4 trillion funding gap, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers. Such improvements, the American Society says, also would add about $4 trillion to the gross domestic product by enhancing productivity.
In Romania, I am not an expert on the budget situation or how the government can find the money to invest in infrastructure. However, roads and bridges across the country are badly in need of upgrades.
You see very little in the mainstream Romanian media about the road problems but credit should be given to the Austrian ambassador to Romania, who has been outspoken about the need for infrastructure improvements. Ambassador Gerhard Reiweger said building a motorway to connect central Brasov to Bucharest is critical for economic development and tourism, the Romania Nine O’Clock News reported June 27.
“Road infrastructure is very important … if there were a motorway from Bucharest to Brasov, from a touristic perspective, we would discuss about another matter. I have often spoken with the leadership of the County Council and the mayor of Brasov and I keep asking the same question: why mayors and county councils do not have the normal influence in Bucharest so that what needs to happen happens – so that roads are built. It would take almost an hour on the motorway from Otopeni (Bucharest’s airport) to Brasov,” Ambassador Reiweger said.
In Romania, the road crisis is also resulting in many deaths. According to a World Bank report in June 2017, fatalities on Romania’s roads in 2016 reached 1,913 – more than double the number of fatalities compared with the EU-28 average of 925. Romania’s average fatality rate over the past six years has consistently been twice higher than the EU-28 average, registering around 91 road fatalities per million people, compared to 51 for the rest of the EU.
Perhaps it would be good for the United States and Romania to work together on innovative transportation solutions. Both countries certainly need the help.

Brașov, România – De fiecare dată când vizitez România , îmi amintesc de provocările imense pe care le oferă infrastructura din întreaga țară, în special necesitatea urgentă de noi autostrăzi. În timp ce călătoream dinspre Brașov spre București, săptămâna trecută, mașina noastră a fost blocată în trafic pentru mai mult de o oră din cauza unui accident rutier.
America, credeți sau nu, se confruntă cu aceleași probleme. Autostrăzile americane sunt supra-aglomerate, iar podurile au nevoie de reparații urgent! Un drum până în Chicago, care ar trebui să dureze 30 de minute, durează dublu sau triplu acum.
Planul Președintelui ales al Americii, Donald Trump , de a cheltui 550 de miliarde de dolari , în următorul deceniu, pentru modernizarea drumurilor, podurilor și căilor navigabile distruse ale țării, a fost bine primit de participanții la trafic, iar experții în transporturi din echipa de consilieri a lui Trump, spun că programul va crea locuri de muncă în valoare de 3,3 milioane de dolari. Moody’s Analytics susține că acest program va adăuga un procent de 0,4% / an la creșterea economică a țării.
Statele Unite trebuie să investească aproximativ 3,3 mii de miliarde de dolari, în următorul deceniu, pentru modernizarea infrastructurii, iar momentan avem o lipsă în finanțare de 1,4 mii de miliarde de dolari, potrivit American Society of Civil Engineers. Astfel de îmbunătățiri, afirmă Societatea Americană, ar adăuga aproximativ 4 trilioane de dolari la Produsul Intern Brut (PIB), prin creșterea productivității.
În ceea ce privește situația în România, nu sunt expert în materie de buget sau modalitățile prin care guvernul poate finanța modernizarea infrastructurii. Totuși e clar ca drumurile și podurile din țară au nevoie urgentă de reparații!
Vedem destul de puține informații, în media română, despre starea drumurilor, însă ar trebui acordat credit ambasadorului austriac în România, care a vorbit public despre necesitatea modernizării infrastructurii românești. Ambasadorul Gerhard Reiweger a sugerat construirea unei autostrăzi care leagă centrul Brașovului de București, acesta fiind un pas foarte important în dezvoltarea economică și a turismului , raportează un buletin de știri din 27 Iunie a.c.
,,Infrastructura este extrem de importantă…dacă am avea o autostrada de la București la Brașov, din perspectivă turistică, ar fi deja altceva. Am vorbit de multe ori cu Președintele Consiliului Județean Brașov și cu primarul Brașovului, și pun mereu aceeași întrebare: de ce primarii și consilierii județeni nu au această influență, normală, la București, ca atunci când vor să facă ceva, să se chiar facă și drumurile să fie modernizate. Un drum de la Otopeni (aeroport din București) până în Brașov ar dura aproximativ o oră.” a declarat ambasadorul Reiweger.
Din păcate, în România, starea drumurilor provoacă destule decese. Potrivit unui raport al Băncii Mondiale , din Iunie 2017, decesele pe drumurile din România au atins numărul alarmant de 1 913 în anul 2016, mai mult decât dublul mediei pe drumurile europene, de 925. Pe parcursul ultimilor 6 ani, rata deceselor în accidente rutiere , în România, a fost mereu dublu peste media drumurilor europene, înregistrându-se aproximativ 91 de decese pe milion de locuitori, comparativ cu 51 pentru restul Europei. Dramatic!
Poate ar fi indicat ca Statele Unite și România să lucreze împreună pentru găsirea de soluții în modernizarea infrastructurii și transporturilor. E clar că ambele țări au nevoie de ajutor, urgent!
